Mahmood Lone

Lead Guide & Local Partner

J&KTD Lic. Ski Guide & Instructor AIARE Level 2 Certified GSP Voluntary Rescue Team Member

20 years guiding in the Himalayas.

Quite simply, Mahmood is known as the fastest and most celebrated ski racer of his generation in Gulmarg, having won countless local, national and regional trophies. Like Mushtaq, he was awarded a ski guide registration and licence by the Government, and is one of the 6 registered ski guides certified by the American Avalanche Association (AAA). He also volunteers with the Gulmarg Ski Patrol (GSP) in emergencies. Mahmood holds a ski instructor licence with the Indian Institute of Mountaineering and is still an in-demand instructor when he is not guiding.

Mahmood started skiing in 1990 and quickly went on to become one of the most widely recognised local ski racers. His display cabinet at home is a bit full, due to his unfailing ability to win almost every race he participated in. Never one to turn down a challenge, Mahmood is a true adrenaline addict and has a predilection for anything steep or fast. He likes to practice by skiing backwards down Mount Apharwat, or strapping on just one ski!

Mahmood has been guiding since 2004 and is a local partner of K-Line. He is fastidious about backcountry safety and will never hesitate to turn down an exciting run due to an unstable snowpack or changing weather patterns. His confidence and optimistic attitude are contagious, and he mentors his clients to help them to get the best of their K-Line experience.

“During our trekking trips, his operational and organisational skills are invaluable to the business. He can always be trusted to communicate effectively with local stakeholders and take charge of any situation.”

The friendship between Paul and Mahmood stems from their mutual love of outdoor adventure – the two can often be found riding down from the top of Mt. Apharwat at top speed.
